Awards Continue to Roll in for Saffer
December 19, 2002--Earlier this week, UCLA OT Mike Saffer was named 3rd team All-American. He was also honored as the Bruins' co-MVP.
Saffer Named to Pac 10 Squad
December 5, 2002--UCLA OT Mike Saffer was named first team All-Pac 10. The senior was a 2nd team pick for the 2001 season.
Drossin Wins One Award, Finalist for Another
December 5, 2002--Deena Drossin, was named the 2002 Visa Humanitarian Athlete of the Year. The honor recognizes contributions U.S. track and field athletes have made off the field of competition. Additionally, Drossin was named a finalist for the Jesse Owens Award, the highest honor bestowed on a US Track & Field athlete. The winner will be announced tomorrow.
Israeli Wing to Join Bulls
November 28, 2002--Raphael Toren, a 6'6" wing from Ramat-Hasharon, Israel, will arrive at the University of South Florida for the 2nd semester of the 2002-03 school year. Toren was recently released from the army and fills a key need for USF. Toren was the top scorer for the Under-18 national team. He likes to post up smaller defenders and can penetrate.
Cohen Signs With Miami
November 28, 2002--Top 5 Under-18 player Josh Cohen has signed a Letter-of-Intent to play for the University of Miami tennis squad beginning in the 2003-04 season. The Hurricanes are now coached by Bryan Getz, who replaced Jay Berger this offseason.

November 25, 2002--The International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame inducted 5 sportsmen last weekend: Al Munro Elias, Tom Okker, Lennie Rosenbluth, DIck Schaap and Sergei Sharikov. More details to follow shortly.
Red Sox Name Epstein GM
November 25, 2002--The Boston Red Sox today named Brookline, MA native Theo Epstein the team's General Manager today. The 28 year old former Padre employee becomes the youngest GM in baseball history.
Tech's Ayalon Given ACC Honor
November 20, 2002--Georgia Tech senior All-American Shilo Ayalon was named Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week Monday after setting a pair of pool records versus Purdue and Cincinnati over the weekend.
Doron to Attend Maryland
November 11, 2002--Christ the King (NY) star guard Shay Doron has committed to attend the University of Maryland in the fall of 2003. Elsewhere, Mater Dei (CA) 6-9 PF Harrison Schaen has announced his intention to enroll at Princeton. He is still awaiting acceptance to the Ivy League power.
Mendelsohn Wins Bronze in Chile
November 1, 2002--Rockvile Center, NY native Alisa Mendelsohn won bronze in the Under-20 Women's foil event at the recently completed Pan American Fencing Championships.
Browns' Lerner Dies
October 22, 2002--Cleveland Browns' owner Al Lerner, who garnered most of his wealth from the MBNA credit card empire, died earlier this evening at the age of 69. JewishSports.com sends its best wishes to the Lerner family and the entire Browns' organization.
Jaguars Waive Epstein
October 22, 2002--After a disappointing 5-9 start on field goals, rookie K Hayden Epstein was waived by Jacksonville yesterday. It had become clear that coach Tom Coughlin had lost confidence in Epstein this past weekend as he opted to punt on numerous occasions inside the opponents' 40 yard line.
Smashnova Ties Career Best
October 21, 2002--After advancing to face 2nd seed Lindsay Davenport in Filderstadt earlier this month, Anna Smashnova improved her ranking to match her career high at 16.
Pan Am Maccabi Games Moved from Caracas
October 15, 2002--Due to political turmoil in Venezuela, the Confederation of Latin American Maccabis has decided to move the Games most likely to Chile. The Games are also likely to be moved back to December, 2003.
Fiedler Out At Least 4 Weeks
October 14, 2002--Dolphins' QB Jay Fiedler suffered a broken thumb in last night's thrilling 24-22 win at Denver. He is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.
Drossin Places 6th
October 13, 2002--Deena Drossin ran a personal best time of 2:26:53 in today's Chicago Marathon to place 6th overall and 1st among American women.
AJHS Honors Jewish Sportsmen
October 7, 2002--Tomorrow night, the American Jewish Historical Society will honor Red Auerbach, Herb and Larry Brown, Red Holzman, Danny and Dolph Schayes and David Stern for their achievements and sportsmanship. Mazel tov!
Pintusevich, Drossin Lead New World Rankings
September 29, 2002--Recent Track & Field and Road Racing rankings released yesterday featured Ukrainian Zhanna Pintusevich-Block at number 1 and 2 in the 100m and 200m, respectively. American Deena Drossin was ranked 4th in the track 10,000m and 1st in both the 5k and 15k Road Racing rankings.
