CWS Hero Lovelady Signs With Marlins
June 19, 2001--University of Miami C Greg Lovelady, a native Miamian, signed
yesterday with his hometown Florida Marlins.
Lovelady a Star in Omaha Win
June 12, 2001--University of Miami catcher Greg Lovelady led the Hurricanes
into the winners' bracket in a 4-3 victory of Southern Cal with a 2-run double
and a sparkling defensive play in the 9th. Also, UM pitcher Andrew Cohn retired
the only batter he faced.
Maccabiah Games in Peril
June 10, 2001--The 16th Maccabiah looks set to be postponed for a year, although
the heads of the organizing committee yesterday put off a final decision until
Friday. Numerous athletes have cancelled their planned attendance of the event
due to recent violence in the region.
WKU's Small Retires
June 6, 2001--Western Kentucky Head Coach

Small announced his retirement on Monday. He leaves with a career record

Cohen Group Buys Panthers
June 6, 2001--A group led by Andrx CEO Alan Cohen purchased the Florida Panthers
yesterday. There are now 4 Jewish owners in the NHL.
Rifkin, Youkilis Among Drafted
June 5, 2001-- In today's MLB Draft, 1B Aaron Rifkin (Cal St. Fullerton) and
3B Kevin Youkilis (Cincinnati) were taken in the 4th (Yankees) and 8th (Red

Jews Shine as Teams Advance to Omaha
June 3, 2001--Among the top performers yesterday in Super Regional action was
Cal State Fullerton's Aaron Rifkin, who belted 3 HRs to help the Titans advance
to the College World Series. In Coral Gables, FL, OF Brad Safchik, C Greg Lovelady
and P Andrew Cohn helped Miami advance to Omaha.
Kholev Wins NCAA Pole Vault
June 1, 2001--
Dennis
Kholev, a Ukrainian immigrant to Israel and a senior at the University of
Southern California, won the NCAA Pole Vault Title on Wednesday by soaring to
a personal best and school record 18-6. He becomes the first Jewish NCAA champion
since Andy Bloom won both the shot put and discus in his senior year at Wake
Forest.
Sheinfeld to Leave WSU
May 31, 2001--Israel Sheinfeld, center for the Wright State University men's
basketball team, will forgo his final year of eligibility and sign a professional
contract, Raider head coach Ed Schilling announced yesterday. Sheinfeld will
hone his skills in a Puerto Rican summer league before looking to play in Israel.

Open Qualifier a Jew
May 27, 2001--Boca Raton's Morgan Pressel enters the upcoming US Women's Open
at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in Southern Pines, NC as the youngest qualifier
in the 56 year history of the tournament. Pressel turned 13 on May 23rd.
MSU Awards Goffer a Scholarship
May 27, 2001--Israeli Roy Goffer, a walk-on guard this past season at Mississippi
State, was awarded an athletic scholarship recently. Goffer played a key role
in the Bulldogs' late season surge.
Bertman Begins Final Run

May 25, 2001--LSU baseball coach Skip Bertman leads the Tigers into his final
NCAA regionals as a head coach. The legendary coach will retire with 866 career
wins at the end of the season, his 18th at LSU. LSU opens the tourney at 3pm
EDT today versus Minnesota in Baton Rouge.
Brown Named Coach of the Year
May 24, 2001--Capping a great season that may carry his team to the NBA Finals,
Larry Brown was named NBA Coach of the Year yesterday. Mazel tov, Larry!
Drossin to Run NYC Marathon
May 23, 2001--Deena Drossin announced in a recent press conference that she
would run her first marathon in this year's NYC Marathon. Said Drossin, "I never
admitted to ever wanting to do one [marathon], but in the past year,
my body has felt strong enough to go the distance and I'm really curious to
do it."
Ze'evi Wins European Championship
May 22, 2001--Friday, Arik Ze'evi won the European Judo Championship in the
men's under-100 kilo category in Paris, becoming the first Israeli male to ever
win the title. Ze'evi beat Frenchman Ghisiain Lamaire in the final with an ippon.
Lerner Goes Home
May 18, 2001--Cleveland Browns' owner Al Lerner underwent brain surgery May
14th, and was discharged from the hospital yesterday. We at JewishSports.com

One Arm Wonder Wows Them in LA
May 16, 2001--Alex Elliot, a 6-1 140 lb sophomore at LA's Marshall High, is
5-3 with a 2.85 earned-run average as the team's No. 2 pitcher. What makes him
stand out, however, is that, like former Major Leaguer Jim Abbott, he was born
without a right hand.
Israel Wins Hockey Silver
May 16, 2001--Israel won its second consecutive medal in international play,
hammering Bulgaria 5-1 to take the silver medal at the IIHF World Senior Hockey
Championships, Group B, Division II.
Maccabi Wins Euro Championship
May 14, 2001--Maccabi Tel Aviv defeated Greece's Panathinaikos, 81-67 Sunday
to win Israel's first European championship in 20 years. On Friday, Maccabi
Tel-Aviv had advanced to the European final for the 2nd year in a row by defeating
CSKA Moscow 86-80 in Paris today.
Manchel Joins Ohio Staff
May 9, 2001--Gary Manchel, who led the UMass Lowell men's basketball team to
a 24-7 record and its first NCAA Tournament bid since 1988 in March, resigned
Monday to become a full-time assistant coach at Ohio University.
Levy Tops Sampras
May 9, 2001--In a rain-delayed match that began on Monday, Israeli Harel Levy
ousted Pete Sampras from the first round of the clay court Italian Open, 7-5,
2-6, 6-4.
Youkilis Tearing It Up
May 7, 2001--University of Cincinatti 3B Kevin Youkilis has picked up this season
where he left off last, during which he was named All Conference-USA. He is
currently hitting .409 with 16 HRs, 53 RBIs, and 18 SBs through 51 games for

Halpern Representing US in Germany
May 3, 2001--Jeff Halpern is currently in Germany as a member of Team USA at
the World Championships, which started April 28. Halpern is making his second
consecutive appearance in these games--he had a goal and an assist for Team
USA last year. The tourney runs through May 13th.
Katash Rehabs in US, Offered LA Tryout
May 3, 2001--Israeli Oded Katash, currently under contract with Panathinaikos
in Greece, has been offered a tryout with the Lakers, but is currently rehabbing
in the US for eight weeks in an attempt at a full recovery in his left knee.
Schwartz Wins at Penn Relays
April 29, 2001--Jillian Schwartz of Duke won the pole vault event at the prestigious
Penn Relays this weekend by clearing a height of12'4 3/4" in fewer attempts
than the nearest competitor.

Waives Wideman

Jamila Wideman, a Stanford
alum who recently was a star in the Israeli league, was waived Tuesday by the
Portland Fire.
Jewish Players Go Undrafted
April 23, 2001--Yesterday's NFL draft went all 246 picks without a single Jewish
player's name being called. However, the buzz around the league is that former
Wisconsin K Vitaly Pisetsky will be a free agent steal for the team that gets
him.
Fleisher Breaks Winless Streak
April 23, 2001--Yesterday, in Las Vegas, Bruce Fleisher won for the first time
in 9 months on the Senior PGA Tour with a three stroke victory over a host of
players in second place.
Halpern the Hero for Caps
April 19, 2001--DC area native Jeff Halpern scored the game winner 4:01 into
OT in last night's 4-3 win over Pittsburgh to tie the series at 2-2. He also
added an assist in the first period.
Rays Fire Rothschild
April 18, 2001--The Tampa Bay Devil Rays fired manager Larry Rothschild today
after a 4-10 start, the team's worst in four seasons. His record was 205-294
(.411) and the Devil Rays have finished last in the American League East each
of their three years.
Pearl Named New UW-Milwaukee Coach
April 12, 2001--Bruce Pearl, formerly at the Southern Indiana, was named head
coach at UW-Milwaukee yesterday. He has a career record of 231-46. Elsewhere
in NCAA hoops news,
Uri Grunwald of UMass-Lowell,
was named the New England Division II rookie of the year and UMass-Lowell the
Most Improved Team in New EnglandDII for the 2000-01 season. Grunwald was the
NE-10 Freshman of the Year and was named 2nd team All-Conference, while
Elad
Inbar received 3rd team honors. Lowell finished the season 24-7 and advanced
to the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament.
Wrestling Team Out of World Champs
April 11, 2001--Ha'aretz is reporting that the national Greco-Roman wrestling
team will not participate in the next world championships, set to take place
September 26-30 in New York, due to Yom Kippur, which falls on the 28th. Israeli
law prohibits any athlete from representing the State on this day.
Rosenblatt Out of Hamed Undercard Bout
April 4, 2001--Dana Rosenblatt, who had been scheduled to fight on the undercard
of Naseem Hamed's main event bout this Saturday in Las Vegas, has withdrawn
for an apparent injury. Perhaps, Dana just wanted to make it to seder in time.
Bluthenthal, USC Bow Out
March 25, 2001--With USC's 79-69 loss to Duke last night, Michgian State's Matt
Ishbia stands as the lone Jew in the NCAA tournament. The Trojans' SF David
Bluthenthal was a great performer over the first two weekends of the tournament
and should go into next season as a player to watch. The 6'7" junior finished
with 17 points last night and 64 points overall.
Kapler Out 2 to 4 Weeks
March 23, 2001--Gabe Kapler tore a muscle in his right leg yesterday in a game
against the Phillies. He is expected to miss two to four weeks.
