September 15, 2002--Israeli Anna Smashnova breezed to a 6-2, 6-3 win of Anna
Kournikova in the Shangai Open. Smashnova was the top seed in the WTA event.
Wayne Wins First
September 11, 2002--Yesterday, with 6+ innings of shutout ball, Marlin P Justin
Wayne notched his first career major league victory over the Phillies.

Israelis Advance in Queens
August 29, 2002--In US Open play this week, Israelis Anna Smashnova, Noam Okun
and Harel Levy all won and advanced to the second round. Also, the doubles team
of Israeli Amir Hadad and Pakistani Aisam Qureshi advanced with a win yesterday.
Ayalon Named ACC Great
August 25, 2002--Georgia Tech senior Shilo Ayalon was named to the ACC's 50th
anniversary Men's Swimming and Diving team last week. Ayalon earned All-America
honors in 2002 in the 1650 freestyle and is a four time All-ACC honoree. He
is joined on the 2003 Rambling Wreck H20 squad by fellow Israelis Yonatan Cohen
and Ofir Sorias, both freshman and sophomre Itai Eden.
Pintusevich-Block Second to Jones
August 25, 2002--This past week's highly anticipated battle between Marion Jones
and Zhanna Pintusevich-Block in the 100m in London in their first head-to-head
matchup of the season ended with Jones winning easily in 10.97, while Pintusevich-Block
finished 2nd in 11.11.
Lezak, Ervin Go 1-2
August 15, 2002--At the US Swimming Championships in Ft. Lauderdale, Jason Lezak
and Anthony Ervin placed first (22.34) and second (22.35), respectively in the
50m freestyle. Lezak added a first place finish in the 100m freestyle, while
Olympic star Lenny Krayzelburg was upset in the 100m backstroke and placed second.
Horowitz Commits
August 15, 2002--Jeff Horowitz, a 6-9, 210 lb power forward from Charlotte who
recently drew interest from Stanford and North Carolina State, verbally committed
Tuesday to the College of Charleston.
Averbukh Wins Gold
August 11, 2002--Israeli Alex Averbukh took gold in the pole vault in the European
Championships in Munich yesterday. The emotional win came one day before a memorial
service for the 11 Israeli athletes killed at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich.
Hapoel Jerusalem Sets Record
August 9, 2002--The 4x200m Freestyle Relay squad from Hapoel Jerusalemn set
the Israeli record at the Israeli National Swimming Champoionships earlier this
week. The team of Shilo Ayalon, Yoav Gath, Ehud Daktar and Miki Halika set the
new recrod at 7:39.99.
JCC Maccabi Games Kick Off
August 6, 2002--The first two host cities of the 2002 JCC Maccabi Games, Memphis
and Omaha, have begun their competitions, which will continue until August 9th.
The three other host cities, Baltimore, Montreal and Springfield, will follow

Goodman Signs WIth Maccabi Tel Aviv
July 28, 2002--Tamir Goodman, the orthodox former Baltimore area HS hoops star,
has signed a 3 year contract with Maccabi Tel Aviv. To get the 20 year old Goodman
more playing time, Maccabi has loaned him to Hapoel Givat Shmuel for the first
year of the contract. The team also signed USC alum David Bluthenthal to a 2
year contract.
Springfield Hall to Honor Pollack
July 22, 2002--Philly statistician Harvey Pollack has been named the 2002 recipient
of the Bunn Award, the Basketball Hall of Fame's highest honor. Pollack, 80,
has worked with the NBA since 1946 and is currently the head scorekeeper for
the 76ers.
Gross Named SDSU Assistant
July 18, 2002--Jennifer Gross, a former UC Davis star, was named an assistant
coach for SDSU's women's basketball team. Gross, whose professional career included
stints in Israel and Denmark, is a San Diego native.
Fiedler To Miss Start of Camp
July 15, 2002-Fins' QB Jay Fiedler had surgery over the weekend on his injured
left hip, He is expected to make a full recovery and be able to play in the
preseason.
Wayne Sent to Marlins in Floyd Deal
July 13, 2002--Former Stanford great Justin Wayne, a first round pick in 2000,
was sent to the Florida Marlins yesterday as part of the Cliff Floyd trade.
The right-handed Wayne was 4-1 2.34 at AA Harrisburg and will be assigned to
AA Portland.
Smashnova Continues to Rise
July 11, 2002--Despite losing in the first round at Wimbledon, Anna Smashnova
moved up one spot to 16 in the WTA rankings and continues to set records as
the highest ranked Israeli tennis player.
Israeli Duo Wins Gold in Marseilles
July 11, 2002--Yogev Yosef and Shahaf Amir won gold yesterday in the double-handed
470-class event at thge World Sailing Games in France.
Bluthenthal Battles for Spot
July 9, 2002--With the Orlando Summer League starting tonight, David Bluthenthal
looks to make a good impression on Pat Riley and the rest of the Heat staff.
He's one of 17 players on the roster looking to make the preseason squad. Elsewhere
6-11 Rice alum Alex Bougaieff is on the Celtics' summer squad.
Zhanna Stakes Her Claim
July 7, 2002--In Greece this weekend, Zhanna Pintusevich-Block posted the world's
fastest 100m time in 2002, with a 10.84, her second fastest time ever.
Three Jews Go High in NHL Draft
July 6, 2002--In last week's NHL Entry Draft, American Eric Nystrom, son of
former Islander Bobby Nystrom, was the 10th pick by the Calgary Flames, while
Canadians Adam Heinrich (2nd round) and Robert Gherson (5th round) were went
to the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Washington Capitals, respectively. Nystrom
is the highest Jewish draft pick in NHL draft history, surpassing Heinrich's
brother Michael, who was picked 13th by Edmonton in 1998. Additionally, OHL
star winger Cory Pecker, who was undrafted despite 53 goals in the minor league,
signed with the Mighty Ducks
Green Likely Headed to Cal
July 6, 2002--With former Depaul commit Marcus White taking UConn's last scholie,
it appears 6-8 Israeli Yaniv Green will head to Berkeley to play for Ben Braun,
unless he remains in Israel to play professionally.
Koral to Transfer
July 2, 2002--QB David Koral has decided to transfer from Vanderbilt since the
new coach is bringing in an option offense. Koral will play at Santa Monica
CC in his native Southern California in the fall, then transfer back to a 1A
school and have three years to play.
Israelis Coming to US
July 1, 2002--Two more Israeli hoopsters are heading to US colleges for the
2002-03 season. Moshe Ya'akosi, a 21 yr old 6-8 PF, is headed to Fordham, while
6-2 PG Danny Hazut, a player on last year's under-21 national team, which placed
6th in the world, will attend Pepperdine. Ya'akosi will likely receive 3 years
of eligibility while Hazut is expected to get 2. They will both likely be major
contributors.
Israeli-Pakistani Duo Advances, Faces Criticism
June 30, 2002--Israeli Amir Hadad and Pakistani Aisamul Haq Qureshi made it
to the 3rd round of Wimbledon men's doubles with a win Friday. However, despite
the team's success, both on the grass and as an example of co-existence, the
Pakistani government, displaying its clear anti-Israel bias, officially condemned
Qureshi's playing with an Israeli and stated that he may face a ban.
Zur Wins Gold in Germany
June 26, 2002--Rami Zur, a former Israeli olympian now rowing for the US, won
a gold medal in the 500m at the kayaking World Cup earlier this week.
Silverman Makes US World Jr. Team
June 26, 2002--UCLA freshman Jeremy

Silverman
placed 2nd in the shot put with a personal best of 63-5 and 7tn in the discus
at last week's USA Jr. T&F Championships. His 2nd place showing in the shot
qualified him to represent the US in the World Jr. Championships.
Ohanon Signs With Billikens
June 25, 2002--Israeli Izchak Ohanon signed a letter of intent with St. Louis
University, the school announced. Ohanon, a 6-9 forward, is expected to have
2 years of eligibility as he is already 22 years old.
