Krayzelburg Twice Smashes Olympic Standard
September 20, 2000--Earlier today, Lenny Krayzelburg broke his own Olympic Record in the 200m backstroke with a blistering 1:47.27, more than a second ahead of the closest qualifier.In the pool yesterday, he set an Olympic Record in the prelims of the 200m backstroke with a time of 1:58.40.
Bloom Falls in 2nd Round
September 20, 2000--Over the past weekend, US epeeist Tamir Bloom lost in the 2nd round to No. 1 ranked Arnd Schmitt of Germany. Bloom placed 29th in the Olympics. His furious comeback nearly won him the match, ""Being down five touches was tough since he knew I'd have to attack. But this has been a great experience. I had a choice when I injured my knee a few months ago, but I decided to put off surgery so I could attend the Olympics. Being out on the strip here in this atmosphere against one of the best players in the world is what it's all about."
Goldblatt Wins Silver
September 19, 2000--Scott Goldbatt won a silver medal as the US team placed second to the Aussies in the 4x200m freestyle relay.
Olympic Record, Gold Medal for Krayzelburg
September 18, 2000--Soviet-born US swimmer Lenny Krayzelburg won the 100m backstroke in Sydney yesterday in an Olympic record time of 53.72, just .12 off his own world record. Placing 8th was Israel's Eithan Urbach. Read about other Jewish Olympians.
Historic Silvers for Ervin and Lezak
September 17, 2000--In Sydney last night, the US Swimming 4x100m freestyle relay team took second to the Australians, securing silver medals for Jason Lezak and Anthony Ervin, a JCC Maccabi Games alumnus. In other Olympic news, Joanna Zeiger of the US placed 4th in the women's triathlon. In the 4x100m prelims, the Israeli foursome of Alexei Manziula, Eitan Orbach, Oren Azrad,and Yoav Bruck finished in a time of 3:22.06, breaking the national record of 3:23.10.
Rosenblatt Back in Action Soon
September 17, 2000--Dana Rosenblatt returns to action Oct. 13 at Foxwoods vs. Will McIntyre. The Malden super middleweight puts his 36-1-1 record on the line against McIntyre (24-1) at minimal risk because McIntyre has only 10 knockouts. McIntyre's only loss was a defeat three years ago to Omar Sheika.
Kapler Chasing .300
September 14, 2000--Rangers OF Gabe Kapler went 0-3 last night and saw his average drop to .296 on the season. With 16 games remaining, he still has an excellent chance at a .300 season, remarkable considering his slow start.
Miller Off to Hot Start
September 13, 2000--Pittsburgh Steeler P Josh Miller is booming kicks this year, ranking 2nd in the NFL so far with a 50.8 yard average. His net 0f 39.2 places him 4th overall.
Astros Pick Up Zosky
September 12, 2000--The Houston Astros yesterday purchased the contract of infielder Eddie Zosky from New Orleans of the AAA Pacific Coast League.
Fiedler, Dolphins' 'O' Struggle
September 11, 2000--In yesterday's 13-7 loss to the Vikings, Jay Fiedler completed just 12 of 31 passes and threw an interception as the Dolphins' offense was unable to consistently move the ball.
Same Position, New Year
September 10, 2000--Jewish kickers have picked up where they left off last year as the 2000 NCAA football campaign is now in full swing. Maryland's Brian Kopka, Michigan's Hayden Epstein, and Wisconsin's Vitaly Pisetsky all had big days in their team's victories. Josh Frankel shined in Oregon's 27-23 loss to Pisetsky and the Badgers.
Glauber Back in Majors
September 6, 2000--The Cincinnati Reds yesterday called pitcher Keith Glauber back up from Louisville of the International League (AAA). The 28 year old Glauber has posted a 2.35 ERA in 3 appearances, all in 1998.
Jay FiedlerFiedler Leads Fins
September 4, 2000-- Miami QB Jay Fiedler, the first other than Dan Marino to start a Dolphins' season opener since 1983, overcame several drops to finish 15-24 for 134 yards and a TD in yesterday's 23-0 victory over Seattle.
Younger Pastner Also Making News
September 3, 2000-Courtney Pastner, the 1999 Texas 5A Player of the Year, has transferred from Texas Tech to the University of Houston. Pastner, a Kingwood, TX native and the younger sister of Arizona PG-turned-coach Josh Pastner, will have 3 years of eligibility after sitting out the 00-01 season per NCAA rules. Look for her to be a big contributor as the Lady Cougars are graduating most of their ball handlers this year.
Bougaieff Signs With Italian Team
September 2, 2000--Alex Bougaieff, the 6'11" former Rice Owl, recently signed a 2 year contract with FILA Biella of the Italian League.
Wayne Named Spikes FinalistJustin Wayne
September 1, 2000--Justin Wayne, an All-American pitcher at Stanford during the 2000 season, has been named a finalist for the 2000 Golden Spikes Award. Wayne is now a member of the Montreal Expos organization after the first-round draft pick (fifth overall) in the 2000 draft signed a professional baseball contract with the club in July.
US Open Tough on Jews
September 1, 2000--It was a rough outing in Flushing Meadows for Jewish netsters. Only one player lasted to the second round of the US Open, Justin Gimelstob, who promptly lost in straight sets to Pete Sampras. The others in the draw, all out in the first round, were Paul Goldstein, Harel Levy, and Anna Shmashnova.
Pastner Wins Nike Title
August 30, 2000--Former Arizona G Josh Pastner, who will be on the Arizona bench next year as anundergraduate assistant coach, coached the Houston Hoops to the Nike World Global Challenge title in a tournament with some of the top Nike summer traveling teams.
Jacobson Signs With Lamar
August 29, 2000--Omaha prep star Ben Jacobson has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Lamar University. Jacobson, a 6-7, 215-pounder who can play either forward position, averaged 20.1 points and grabbed 10.2 rebounds per game for Omaha (Neb.) Central High School as a senior. He played AAU ball for Bob Gottlieb, the father of former Oklahoma St PG Doug Gottlieb.

August 27, 2000--US distance runner Deena Drossin has decided to forego the 5,000m race at the Sydney Games to dedicate herself to the 10,000m, which is her stronger race.
Dubinsky Signs With Blackhawks
August 27, 2000--RW Steve Dubinsky, who began his career in Chicago, but had played the past two seasons with Calgary, returns this season to the Windy City after signing with the Blackhawks earlier this week. Earlier in the offseason, Defenseman Matthieu Schneider signed with the LA Kings.
Beckerman An Alternate
August 21, 2000--Alyssa Beckerman survived a rough first day at the US Olympic Trials to make the Gymnastics team as an alternate. In other Olympic news, Margie Goldstein-Engle will lead the first all-female contigent for the US in the Equestrian events.
Fiedler Back at Practice
August 20, 2000--QB Jay Fiedler returned to Dolphins' practice Saturday just 16 days after hip surgery. With Damon Huard struggling, the door is still open for Fiedler to win the starting job.
Two Jewish QBs on One Team!
August 18, 2000--After the Miami Dolphins signed Gus Ornstein on Wednesday, they became the first NFL team to have two Jewish QBs on the roster at once. The other, Jay Fiedler, who is recovering from hip surgery, has already begun throwing.
Birbraer Inks Three Year Deal
August 18, 2000--Max Birbraer, the first Israeli to be taken in the NHL entry draft this past June, signed a three year, $1.5 pact with the Stanley Cup Champion New Jersey Devils. Birbraer, a Soviet immigrant, was taken in the third round.
Gymnastics Trials in Boston This Weekend
August 16, 2000--Alyssa Beckerman looks to join the already large contigent of Jewish Olympians this weekend in Boston at the gymnastics trials. Good luck, Alyssa!
Kapler's Streak Ends at 28
August 16, 2000--Mazel tov to Gabe Kapler on his MLB season-high 28 game hit streak, which ended tonight in a 5-0 Rangers victory over the Yanks.
Agoos Off to Sydney
August 16, 2000--Jeff Agoos was officially placed on the Olympic soccer squad today as one of the wildcard entries over the age of 23.
Kapler Extends Streak to 27
August 15, 2000--Gabe Kapler went 2-for-4 yesterday in a 7-3 loss to the Yankees to extend his major league season-high hitting streak to 27 games. Kapler is hitting .380 (41-for-108) during the streak and has raised his average to .290 on the season.
Krayzelburg Sweeps, Goldblatt Qualifies for Sydney at US Trials
August 14, 2000--In Indianapolis, backstroker Lenny Krayzelburg swept the 100m and 200m races to continue his trek towards double individual gold at Sydney. In the 200m Freestyle, Scott Goldblatt placed 2nd to qualify for the Olympics in both the 200m and the 4x200m relay. In the 100m Freestyle, Jason Lezak qualified with a fourth place finish for the 4x100m relay.
Beeten Takes Head Coaching Gig
August 9, 2000--Scott Beeten, who served as Cal's associate men's basketball coach the past three seasons, has accepted the head coaching position at the State University of New York at Albany. Read more about it here.
Fiedler Goes Under Knife, Huard Wins Starting Job
August 4, 2000--Dolphins QB Jay Fiedler, 28, who was competing with Damon Huard for the starting job, required arthroscopic hip surgery Thursday night for an injury that has bothered him since training camp began. He is expected back by September.
Pintusevich in 2nd as Jones Dominates
August 2, 2000-- Marion Jones left Zhanna Pintusevich-Block in the dust in 2nd place with a time of 10.68, .3 better than Pintusevich-Block, at Stockholm's star-studded 100m. In the women's 5000, Deena Drossin ran the 2nd best US time ever, but only managed a 9th place finish. Rogel Nachum of Israel placed an impressive 7th in the men's Triple Jump.
Zhanna is Golden in Oslo
July 31, 2000-- Zhanna Pintusevich-Block dominated the field winning the Oslo Golden League Meeting in a time of 10.93 .19 ahead of 2nd place. She has a big challenge on Tuesday when she faces world number 1 Marion Jones in Stockholm.
Gimelstob to Face Goldstein
July 28, 2000--Justin Gimelstob, fresh off a thrilling 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-3) victory over Mark Philippoussis, will face Paul Godstein in an all-Jewish quarterfinal match at the Los Angeles Open.
Horenstein is Champ to the Extreme
July 28, 2000--Moti Horenstein has scrapped his way to the top of the Extreme Sports world in only his 2nd year as a pro. Horenstein, from Tel Aviv, now holds the world title in the ultra-violent fighting sport, which combines various styles into one no-holds barred battle.
Most Israeli Olympians Ever

Smashnova Wins Sanex Trophy
July 24, 2000--Israeli Anna Smashnova won her second title this year by defeating crowd favorite and top seed Dominique Van Roost yesterday in the final of the $110,000 Sanex Trophy, 6-2, 7-5, in Belgium.
Goucher Takes 5,000
July 24, 2000--25 year-old Adam Goucher battled a sore achilles and sore back to win the US Olympic Trials 5,000 in a time of 13 minutes, 27.06 seconds. On the women's side, Deena Drossin qualified with a second place finish in the 5,000 with a time of 15:11.55

July 19, 2000--For those of you keeping score at home, Orthodox hoops sensation Tamir Goodman, who is to begin his Freshman year at Towson in the fall, has been assigned the number 22. Anyone know the gematriatic significance of that number?
Goucher, Drossin Advance to Finals of 5,000
July 18, 2000--In yesterday's US Olymic Trials, Adam Goucher and 10,000m winner Deena Drossin advance to their respective finals in the 5,000m. Drossin placed 3rd in her prelim, while Goucher placed 5th. The finals are on Friday, Jule 21st.
Drossin Off to Sydney After Winning 10,000
July 17, 2000--Deena Drossin stayed with the pack for most of the US Olympic Trial 10,000m finals before pulling away to win and qualify for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. She completed the race in a career-best and trials record time of 31:51.05. In other Olympic Trial news, Andy Bloom qualified in the shot put by taking third at 70-10 3/4, another career best and also on his final try. Check out our Jews in the Olympics page.
Fleisher off to Great Start at the Senior Players Championship
July 14, 2000--In Dearborn, Michigan, Bruce Fleisher matched the first-round record with a 7-under 65 to share the lead with two others in the Senior PlayersChampionship on Thursday. Fleisher, a three-time winner this season, went into the championship trailing Hale Irwin by just $10,474 on the money list.
Pintusevich-Block Runs Season Best in Lausanne
July 10, 2000--At the competitive Swiss meet, Zhanna Pintusevich-Block, Nike placed 2nd in the 100m in a season best of 10.94. Look for Zhanna to challenge for a medal in Sydney this year.
Borochovsky Qualifies for Sydney While Urbach Finishes a Disappointing 4th
July 7, 2000--Sixteen-year-old Vered Borochovsky has qualified as Israel's first woman swimmer in the Olympic Games. However, Eithan Urbach, who had the best qualifying time in prelims, finished 4th in the 100m backstroke.
Urbach Leads 4x100 to Olympic Qualifying Time
July 6, 2000--Israel's men's 4x100 meter freestyle relay swimming team achieved the Olympic criterion for the Sydney Games after reaching the European Championship finals in Helsinki. The four - Alexei Manjola, Oren Azrad, Yoav Bruck and Eithan Urbach - finished sixth out of 19 competing nations in a combined time of 3 minutes, 23.26 seconds. Urbach is a favorite for gold in the 100m backstroke.
Bearcat Named 2nd Team AA
July 3, 2000--Infielder Kevin Youkilis from the University of Cincinnati was named second team All American. He led Conference USA in 5 offensive categories and broke the all-time season home run record at UC along with many other career records. He will be a senior next year and is currently playing in the Cape Cod League. He is leading the league in on-base percentage and walks. He is also in the top ten in hitting. Israeli Basketball NCAA Signings
July 3, 2000--Tom Kaplan, a 6'4" shooting guard from Tel-Aviv, has signed with Monmouth University. Kaplan is a crafty scorer who comes from an athletic family. His father Steve was a star at Rutgers and later led the Israeli league in scoring.
Haim Shimonovic, a 6'10" native of Rishon-LeZion, Israel, has signed with the University of Hawaii. Shimonovic, a rock solid center, is being expected tobe be the top post reserve player for his freshman season. Shimonovic has received a deferment of the remaining 3 months of his mandatory 3-year army so that he can attend Hawaii this Fall.
Fleisher is Runner-Up
July 3, 2000--Bruce Fleisher continued to play well on the Senior PGA Tour, but failed to capture the US Open Championship as Hale Irwin was playing nearly flawless golf, while Fleisher finished 2nd.
Doron Sheffer Retires
July 3, 2000--Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball star Doron Sheffer, who also played for the University of Connecticut, stunned Israeli basketball fans recently when he announced that he is retiring at the age of 28. Read more about it here
