A Record for Drossin
September 16, 2001--Deena Drossin set a new U.S. women-only record of 1:10:08
earlier this month in winning the inaugural Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in Virginia
Beach. The race is part of Drossin's preparation for her first marathon, the
prestigious New York City Marathon this November.
Greenberg Signs with Danish Team
September 10, 2001--Bess Greenberg, the most accomplished basketball player
in Binghamton history, signed with the Virum Basketball Club just outside Copenhagen.
In related news, former GWU hoopster Leslie Carlson, a 6'4" center, signed with
the Maccabi Tel Aviv women's club.
Green Pulls a Koufax
September 5, 2001--Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Shawn Green announced today
that he plans to sit out what could be a crucial game against the San Francisco
Giants on Sept. 26 in observance of Yom Kippur, which begins at sundown on the
26th.
Averbukh Wins Gold
September 4, 2001--In Beijing last week, Pole vaulter Alex Averbukh captured
the gold medal at the University Games, the first ever for an Israeli athlete.
Also in China, Israel's Wodag Zvadia grabbed the silver medal in the half-marathon
in a time of 1 hour 4.30 minutes.
Knicks Hire Greer
September 4, 2001--Andy Greer, an 18-year college coach veteran, was named assistant
coach/scout for the New York Knicks. The Manhattan native most recently served
as interim head coach at Northern Illinois for the 2000-01 season
Katash Cut From Greek Team
August 23, 2001--Israeli hoopster Oded Katash was released from Greek team Panathinaikos
yesterday. He has been battling a knee injury. His next move may be to Los Angeles,
where the Lakers have reportedly invited him to training camp.
Pats' Turk Calls on Hadenfeldt
August 13, 2001--Former Nebraska kicking specialist Dan Hadenfeldt was cut over
the weekend by the New England Patriots.
Silver for Averbukh
August 12, 2001--Alex Averbukh, a Russian-born Israeli, won a silver medal in
the pole vault at the World Championships on Friday with a jump of 5.85 meters.
Andy Bloom did not place due to an injury. Also in Edmonton, Adam Goucher of
the US placed 10th in the 5000m, American Deena Drossin placed 11th in the 10000m,
Israeli Vadim Bavikin placed 12th in the javelin, and Svetlana Zalevskaya of
Kazakstan placed 12th in her heat of the high jump.
Zhanna Zhocker!
August 6, 2001--In what may be the biggest upset ever by a Jewish athlete, Zhanna
Pintusevich won a gold medal in the 100m at the World Championships in Edmonton
this evening. Her win ended Marion Jones' winning streak of 42 straight finals.
Her time of 10.82 is a personal best and the best ever by a Jewish sprinter.
Israeli Places 20th in Marathon
August 5, 2001--Asaf Bimro ran a 2:22.36 at the World Championships in Edmonton
on Friday. Elsewhere on the Israeli sports scene this past week, Yitzhak Mamistalov
won a gold medal and shattered another world record, his fourth within the past
several days at the European disabled swimming championships now being held
in Sweden. At the same competition, Keren Leibovitch won a gold medal in the
100-meter backstroke.
Ze'evi Wins Judo Silver
July 30, 2001--At the Judo World Championships in Munich, Arik Ze'evi won a
silver medal over the weekend. It was the only medal for the Israeli contingent.
Schaen Ranked 12th Best Underclassman
July 26, 2001--Fresh off the heels of Dan Grunfeld's impressive performance
at the Addidas ABCD Camp, Santa Ana, CA's Harrison Schaen, a 6'8" junior-to-be
turned plenty of heads in Indianapolis at Nike's camp. He was ranked the 12th
best underclassman at the camp by Bob Gibbons.
Ervin a World Champ
July 23, 2001--Anthony Ervin, the 2000 Olympic gold medalist in the 50 free,
won the 50-meter freestyle at the 2001 World Championships in a time of 22.09
over Pieter van den Hoogenband of the Netherlands (22.16).
Agoos Top MLS All Star Vote Getter
July 19, 2001--Jeff Agoos of the San Jose Earthquakes was the top vote getter
in Major League Soccer All-Star Game balloting with nearly 8,000 more votes
than the runner-up. He is among only 6 players who have appeared in all 5 previous
All Star games.
Krayzelburg Injures Shoulder
July 17, 2001--Lenny Krayzelberg, just after setting a new Maccabiah record
in the 100m backstroke, announced he will not compete in other events due to
a shoulder injury.
Grunfeld Impresses at ABCD
July 15, 2001--Dan Grunfeld, son of Milwaukee Bucks' GM Ernie Grunfeld, was
recently rated the 12th best shooting guard at Adidas' ABCD Camp. Grunfeld,
a 6'5" senior-to-be at Nicolet HS, was first-team Milwaukee North Shore Conference
last season.
Alcott Released from Hospital
July 10, 2001--Hall of Fame golfer Amy Alcott was released from a hospital Monday
after chest pains forced her to miss the final round of the Jamie Farr Kroger
Classic.
Kaplan Helps BABC to National Championship
July 8, 2001--Sam Kaplan scored 9 points helping the Boston Amateur Basketball
Club (BABC) to the 16-and-under AAU national championship with a 57-49 victory
over Team Indiana in Pontiac, Michigan on July 3rd. The BABC capped its season
with a 36-0 record. Kaplan, a 6'6" rising junior for Worcester Academy (MA),
is a high Division I prospect.
Zhanna Places 2nd to Jones
July 8, 2001--In Paris Friday, Zhanna Pintusevich-Block ran the3rd fastest 100m
time in the world for 2001 and placed 2nd to Marion Jones in a time of 10.96.
Maccabi Tel Aviv Coach Resigns
July 5, 2001--Maccabi tel Aviv coach Pini Gershon resigned yesterday in part
due to pressure resulting from publication of his racist comments from last
year. Replacing him will be David Blatt, an American who led Princeton to an
Ivy League championship in 1981 and previously coached Hapoel Galil Elyon for
4 1/2 seasons and was voted 1996 Coach of the Year.
Doron to Play at Christ the King
July 4, 2001--Shay Doron, a 5'9" Guard/Forward from Ramat-Hasharon, Israel,
will play her junior year of high school next year at legendary girls' basketball
power Christ the King (Middle Village, NY). Doron holds dual Israeli-American
citizenship and is considered the most talented Israeli under age 18. Doron
will also play on the famous Liberty Belles AAU club this summer.
Fleisher Becomes First Male Jewish Grand Slam Winner in 38 Years
July 2, 2001--Yesterday in Peabody,

Massachusetts,
Bruce Fleisher held off Gil Morgan and Isao Aoki to finish at even par to win
the Senior US Open to become the first Jewish winner of a men's Grand Slam event
since 1963, when Herman Barron won the same event in Port St. Lucie, FL.
Sheffer and Henefeld Honored by UConn
July 1, 2001--The University of Connecticut announced last week that two Israeli
stars would be honored as members of the 20 best players ever to wear the blue
and white uniform of the Huskies. Doron Shefer and Nadav Henefeld, who both
played for the Huskies in the early 1990s, were voted onto the elite roster,
and are expected to make the trip to the United States to receive a special
honor from their alma mater.
Pintusevich-Block Continues Her Winning Ways
July 1, 2001--Last week in Lucerne, Switzerland, Zhanna Pitusevich-Block, overcame
a slow start and rain storm to win her 4th straight 100m race.
Wilpon to Buy Doubleday's Share
June 22, 2001--Mets' co-owner Fred Wilpon is poised to buy the other 50% of
the team over the next few weeks, the Newark Star-Ledger reports. Wilpon will
apparently divide up a portion of the team among a variety of Jewish New York
businessmen, including Lewis and Jack Rudin, Donald Zucker, and Bob Tisch, co-owner
of the New York Giants.
