March 17, 2001--6'7" forward David Bluthenthal scored a team-high 20 points and snatched 6 boards in leading USC to a 74-71 upset of BC in the East Region today.
Life And Times Racking Up Awards
March 13, 2001--The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg, snubbed by the Academy Awards, has nonetheless dominated film awards lately, winning the National Society of Film Critics and New York Film Critics Circle choice for Best Non-Fiction Film 2000. It was also voted Best Documentary 2000 by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, the Chicago Film Critics, Florida Film Critics, the Las Vegas Film Critics Society and National Board of Review of Motion Pictures. The film received the Spirit Award for Best Sports Documentary at the International Sports Video and Film Awards at the Sports Supershow in Atlanta (1999) and a CINE Golden Eagle (2000).
Fogler Leaving South Carolina
March 12, 2001--Eddie Fogler resigned as South Carolina's head coach today. He finished his 8 seasons with the Gamecocks with a 123-116 record.
Soldinger Gets Promotion
March 6, 2001--University of Miami RB coach Don Soldinger was given the additional responsibility of special teams coordinator yesterday. Soldinger has been a coach for the Hurricanes off and on since 1984 and was once one of South Florida's most successful high school coaches.
Goodman Ends Up-and-Down Season
March 5, 2001--Tamir Goodman, Towson's much ballyhooed freshman, ended his rookie year Saturday night with a 7 point, 3 assist performance, while being limited to just 14 minutes in the second half due to his observance of Shabbat. He finished the season averaging 6 points, 4 assists and 2.5 boards per game.

March 1, 2001--Coming off a 29 point, 8 rebound effort in a win over Oregon, the Trojans' David Bluthenthal leads USC into tonight's crucial PAC-10 matchup with Stanford. Elswhere in NCAA news,Pitt's Laine Selwyn has turned it on as of late, averaging 16 points/game over her last three contests.
Goodman to Sit Out Opening Game
February 28, 2001--In the first such conflict of his young college career, Tamir Goodman will sit out his team's opening round game of the America East Tourney this Friday night to observe Shabbat. Should Towson make it to the next round, Goodman will miss the early minutes as the game is to begin at 6pm Saturday.
Combine Welcomes Hadenfeldt and Pisetsky
February 23, 2001--This weekend, in Indianapolis, the NFL Scouting Combine is taking place. Holding the Jewish torch inside the RCA Dome are P Dan Hadenfeldt and K Vitaly Pisetsky. Each is expected to be drafted in April's draft.
Australians End Maccabi Boycott
February 20, 2001--Maccabi Australia is planning to send a team to compete in the upcoming Maccabi Games, an official said yesterday. Tom Danos, the head of Maccabi Australia, said his organization would try to send a complete delegation to the games, which open in Jerusalem on July 16.
Drossin Defends Title
February 18, 2001--Yesterday, Deena Drossin won her fourth U.S. 8k national title at the 2001 USA Winter Cross Country Championships in Vancouver, Wash. Drossin easily defended her U.S. title by winning the race in 26 minutes and 14 seconds.
Frank Absorbed into IBL
February 13, 2001--The Rockford Lightning were among 3 former CBA teams adopted by the IBL yesterday. Included in the league swap was Gabe Frank, a 6'5" G/F who had been averaging nearly 7 points per game. The former Wisconsin-Stevens Point player was a first team All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference performer his senior year.
Selwyn Scores Big in Loss to Notre Dame
February 8, 2001--In last night's 72-58 loss to #1 Notre Dame, Pitt's Laine Selwyn had a big night with 23 points, including 4 3-pointers. Also in college hardwood news, keep your eyes on USC's David Bluthenthal in tonight's crosstown battle with UCLA.
Does Jeff Agoos Know the Way to San Jose?
February 7, 2001--Earlier this week, star defenseman Jeff Agoos was sent by D.C. United to San Jose forforward Abdul Thompson Conteh and the Earthquakes' No. 8 and No. 10 picks in the 2001 MLS Superdraft. In San Jose, Jeff will join fellow Jew Dan Calichman on defense.
Greenberg Sets Record in Win
January 24, 2001--Bess Greenberg set a Binghamton University record for career three-pointers in leading the Bearcats to an 84-71 basketball victory Monday night at Bucknell. Greenberg (23 pts), who passed the three-point mark of179 set by Cathy Mackin in 1998, finished with three three-pointers.
Rosenblatt To Fight Reid?
January 21, 2001--According to the Boston Globe's Ron Borges, Dana Rosenblatt, the super middleweight from Malden, Mass., has agreed to fight 1996 Olympic gold medalist and former junior middleweight champion David Reid March 10th in Las Vegas.
Goodman On a Roll
January 21, 2001--Tamir Goodman has put together two straight excellent games for the Towson Tigers. In last week's win over Northeastern, he chipped in 15 points and 10 assists and last night, in a tough 67-64 loss to Delaware, he had 12 points and 8 assists. In other NCAA hoops news, Illinois-Chicago's Jordan Kardos scored 12 points in an 83-63 victory over crosstown rival Loyola-Chicago.
Sharon Named Rookie of the Week Again
January 18, 2000--Earlier this week, Duquesne's Shiri Sharon picked up her second Atlantic-10 Rookie of the Week award by averaging 14.5 ppg, 3.5 spg and 2.0 rpg. She shot 50% from the field and 62.5% from behind the arc. She led her team with a career-high 21 points and a game-best four steals in a Jan. 12 loss at St. Joseph's. Sharon ranks 2nd in the A-10 with 2.9 spg and 4th in assists, dishing out 5.2 apg.

January 15, 2001--Molly Lederman highlighted the final day of the Dartmouth Relays as she set a Relays and Leverone Field House pole vault record, clearing 12-6 1/2 on Sunday.
Skater Cohen May Be Out
January 12, 2001--Sasha Cohen, who was expected to challenge four-time titlist Michelle Kwan for the women's title at next week's US Figure Skating Championships at the FleetCenter in Boston, may have to withdraw with a back injury, perhaps caused by a recent growth spurt.
Selwyn Scores Career High in Pitt Loss
January 8, 2001--Laine Selwyn scored a career-high 25 points but the Pittsburgh women's basketball team fell to host Syracuse, 70-55, in Big East Conference action yesterday at Manley Field House. Also in women's college basketball action yesterday, William & Mary's Ornit Shwartz, in her first action of the season, notched 9 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in The Tribe's 76-74 loss to ECU.
Shwartz Finally Eligible
January 7, 2001--William and Mary freshman women's basketball player Ornit Shwartz was declared eligible by the NCAA on Friday. Shwartz, 21, is a native of Israel who hadn't played a game so far this season for the Tribe because of an investigation into her participation on a club team back home. She is eligible immediately and will play when W&M visits East Carolina today.
Glickman Dies at Age 83
January 5, 2001-- Marty Glickman, a track star who was denied a chance to run in the 1936 Berlin Olympics because he was Jewish, died Wednesday at the age of 83. Glickman later became well known as a sports announcer for New York professional sports teams. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.
Drossin Nominated for Performance of the Year
December 30, 2000--Deena Drossin, coming off her best season yet, has been nominated by Runner's World Magazine for the Best American Women's Performance for 2000 for running a national short course cross-country title the day after she won the long course race.
Schloss and UAlbany to Part Ways?
December 23, 2000--Center Dave Schloss, a 6'11" junior, didn't meet as planned Friday with University at Albany basketball coach Scott Beeten, and it appears Schloss isn't returning to the team. Schloss left the team Dec. 16 because he felt Beeten was too critical of him. This season, he averaged 7.5 points and 4.3 rebounds in 10 games for UAlbany (2-8).
