Zhanna Named Top Ukrainian Athlete
March 18, 2002--Zhanna Pintusevich-Block, who shocked Olympic champion Marion
Jones at the World Championships in the 100m, was named Ukrainian Sports Person
of the Year Saturday. She is the first female track athlete ever to win the
coveted award.
Hapoel Tel Aviv Scores Huge Upset
March 14, 2002--In arguably the largest sports victory in the history of the
State of Israel, Hapoel Tel Aviv beat perennial European football powerhouse
AC Milan 1-0 today in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Cup. Play continues March
21st in Milan.
Drossin Sets 15-K Record
March 14, 2002--Deena Drossin broke the U.S. record for a 15-kilometer road
race last week, winning the Gate River Run in 48 minutes, 14 seconds.The race
served as the national championship for the distance, which Drossin now has
won three straight times, the first woman to do so.
Rosenblatt Will Not Fight
March 12, 2002--Eric Lucas' win over Vinny Pazienza recently has led to a change
of Rosenblatt's 2002 schedule. With a shot at Lucas' WBC super middleweight
title likely later in the year, Rosenblatt will push back his tuneup fight,
and will instead provide the color for the March 22 fight card on which he was
originally scheduled.
Tamir Named to Pac-10 Freshman Team
March 10, 2002--Amit Tamir, a 22 year old Jerusalemite, whose 10.6 ppg rank
2nd on the 21st ranked Cal squad, was named to the Pac 10 All-Freshman squad,
despite missing much of the pre-conference schedule because of an NCAA eligibility
ruling.
Hosting Controversy Leads to Change
March 10, 2002--The UEFA has decided that Hapoel Tel Aviv's quarterfinal battle
with AC Milan will be played in Nicosia, as a result of the violence in Israel,
despite arguments from numerous members of the Israeli government, including
Ariel Sharon. The game will take place at the GSP stadium on March 14 at 9pm.
Gold for Hughes a First
March 4, 2002--Great Neck, NY's Sarah Hughes' Gold Medal victory in Salt Lake
City was the first ever Olympic figure skating gold for a Jewish athlete.
Israeli Soccer Stunner in Italy
February 28, 2002--Hapoel Tel Aviv became the first Israeli team to reach the
UEFA Cup quarterfinals with a 2-1 upset win in Parma last night. The team faces
Italian giant AC Milan in the next round.
Rosenblatt to Fight March 22
February 26, 2002--After 15 months off, Dana Rosenblatt is returning to action
March 22nd in his hometown of Boston. The opponent has yet to be determined.
Hughes' Gold May Be Noteworthy
February 23, 2002--Amy Hughes, the mother ofSarah Hughes, the 16 year old Long
Island native who won gold Thursday night in figure skating, is Jewish. Our
sources have not yet confirmed whether Sarah was raised Jewish, but we'll be
sure to post any details when we receive them.
Cohen Still in Gold Hunt
February 19, 2001--Sasha Cohen skated to a 3rd place finish in tonight's short
program, leaving her in solid position to compete for a gold leading into Thursday's
free skating competition.
Fleisher in the Lead
February 17, 2002--After shooting a 6 under 65 on Saturday, Bruce Fleisher took
a 1 stroke lead into the final round of the Verizon Classic. A win would be
his 15th in just 4 years on the Senior Tour. Good luck today, Bruce!
Bluthenthal Back on Track
February 17, 2002--After struggling for most of the season, USC F David Bluthenthal
has emerged from his slump with two big performances back-to-back: 21 points
in the Trojans' win over Arizona St on Thursday and 31 in last night's win over
9th ranked Arizona.
Fiedler Re-Signs with 'Phins
February 14, 2002--Mazel tov to QB Jay Fiedler who re-signed with the Dolphins
for 5 years and $24.5M, including a $4M signing bonus. Fiedler is coming off
leading Miami to back-to-back 11 win seasons, the best consecutive years for
the team since the 84 and 85 seasons.
NCAA Hoopsters Shine
February 11, 2002--In a big win over St. John's this past weekend, Pitt's Laine
Selwyn posted the school's first triple-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds and
10 assists. For her efforts, she was named co-Big East Player of the Week. Also
on the hardwood, in Cal's 107-103 OT win over 15th ranked Oregon, Israeli Amit
Tamir tallied 39 points and 5 rebounds. The 6'10" freshman is averaging 12.1
ppg and was named PAC 10 player of the week for his efforts.
Selwyn Shines at Pitt
January 31, 2002--In a tough 75-71 loss to Syracuse, Pitt junior G Laine Selwyn
recorded her fourth straight double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds, while
adding 7 assists. The Coral Springs, FL native is averaging 13.7 points, 5.5
rebounds and 6.7 assists (10th in NCAA) per game. Elsewhere, Duquesne G Shiri
Sharon is 13th in assists with 6.6 a contest.
Taves on Expansion List
January 26, 2002--Oakland DL Josh Taves was not protected and will be available
for the expansion Houston Texans in the upcoming expansion draft to be held
on February 18th.
Weinstein Qualifies for Olympics
January 24, 2002--Dan Weinstein has qualified for the short course 5k relay
in the upcoming Salt Lake City Games. The Harvard student also competed in the
Nagano Games.
World Cup a Stage for Jewish Swimmers
January 20, 2002--Israeli swimmers set 5 new national records in Paris this
weekend while winning a total of 4 medals. Also, American Jason Lezak took home
the gold medal in the 100m freestyle.
Smashnova Wins Aussie Tourney
January 14, 2002--Israel's Anna Smashnova upset top seed Tamarine Tanasugarn
7-5, 7-6 last weekend to win the Canberra Classic women's tennis tournament.
It is her 4th career WTA title.
Cohen Secures Olympic Spot
January 13, 2002--Californian Sasha Cohen skated a spirited and courageous routine
to a silver medal in yesterday's US Figure Skating Championships. She finished
in the same spot in 2000.
Epstein Invited to Senior Bowl
January 8, 2002--Michigan senior K/P Hayden Epstein has been invited to the
prestigous Senior Bowl, to be played January 26th in Mobile, AL. Epstein, a
2000 Ray Guy Award finalist, averaged 40 yards per punt in his Wolverine career
and owns the school record with 4 caeer FGs over 50 yards.
