Shyatt Resigns
March 18, 2003--Clemson head basketball coach Larry Shyatt resigned yesterday
after his Tigers failed to secure an NIT bid. Shyatt was 15-13 this year and
had a 70-84 record in 5 years at Clemson.
New Bobsled Team for Israel
March 14, 2003--One Canadian and two Americans have established a two-man bobsled
team that they hope will compete for Israel in the next winter Olympics. David
Greaves of Winnipeg, and Aaron Zeff and John Frank, both of San Francisco, have
received authorization from the Israeli Olympic Committee. All three have applied
for Israeli citizenship. Their newly formed Israeli Bobsled Federation has invented
a new Hebrew word for bobsled, "mizchelet bob," based on the Hebrew word for
sled, mizchelet.
Cohen Tops at Grand Prix
February 28, 2003--American Sasha Cohen topped a tough field at the Skating
Grand Prix in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Doron Selected to McDonald's AA Squad
February 28, 2003--Maryland bound G Shay Doron, a 5-8 senior at Christ The King
in Queens, NY was named to the McDonald's All American East Team. Doron, an
Israeli native, has averaged 17 pts/game this year on a team featuring an astonishing
7 D-1 signees.
Koufax Cuts Dodger Ties Over Post Report
February 21, 2003--Longtime LA Dodger Sandy Koufax has severed his ties with
the team and will not be at spring training in Dodgertown this year. The break
is based on Koufax's anger over a gossip report in the New York Post, which
is owned by Dodger owner News Corp.
Drossin Dominates on Her Way to 6th Title

February 19, 2003--Deena Drossin won her 6th career cross-country long course
national title last weekend by dominating the field in Houston. Drossin completed
the muddy, hilly 8 km course in 24:40.
Israeli/Pakistani Duo Win Ashe Award
February 16, 2003--Israeli Amir Hada and Pakistani Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi, the
unheralded and unlikely doubles team who made it to the third round of Wimbledon
last summer, were awarded the Arthur Ashe Humaunitarian Award last week.
Green Sets School Record
February 7, 2003--Kansas St junior field star Rebekah Green smashed a school
record in the shot put by 11 inches last week with a throw of 56ft 8 in.
Gabbe Named Big West Player Of The Week
January, 30, 2003--Cal-Irvine senior guard Wendy Gabbe was selected as the Big
West Player of the Week after leading UCI to victories over Pacific and Cal
State Northridge. Gabbe made 55% from 3 pt range in two games. For the week,
she averaged 20.0 pts, 4.5 rebs, 2.5 asts and 2.5 stls per game. She played
74 minutes without committing a turnover. It is her 2nd career honor.
Super Bowl Matches Jewish Owners
January 21, 2003--In only the 4th matchup between two teams with Jewish owners,
Sunday's Super Bowl matches Oakland's Al Davis and Tampa Bay's Malcolm Glazer.
The winner will be the third straight Super Bowl winner owned by a Jew.
Lezak Wins 50M Free
January 20, 2003--Jason Lezak won the 50M free for the second week in a row
at the third stop of the 2002-2003 FINA World Cup series in Shanghai this past
weekend.
Drossin Ends 2002 Ranked #2
January 13, 2003--Deena Drossin finished 2nd in Track and Field News' 2002 ranking
of female marathoners. The Californian capped off a spectacular season with
a personal best run of 2:26:53 in Chicago. Drossin's time was the fastest by
an American this season.
Only One Israeli Down Under
January 12, 2003--Newly married Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi will be the only Israeli
to take part in this year's Australian Open after all the other Israelis were
knocked out in the qualifying rounds.
Foreman Gets Easy Win, Plans to Move Up
January 12, 2003--Junior Middleweight Yuri Foreman scored a unanimous 6-round
decision (60-54) over Andrey Trunov at the Mohegan Sun Resort and Casino Friday
night. The Brooklyn based boxer is 7-0 and plans to move up to 8-rounders next
month. Foreman won the fight with nice combination series and a strong right
that bloodied his opponent's nose and forehead. Stay tuned for more on the former
Soviet immigrant.
Gillman Passes Away at 91
January 6, 2003--Sid Gillman, the "father of modern-day passing" in football,
passed away this past weekend at age 91. Gillman, whose coaching career spanned
6 decades, was as influential as any coach in the history of college or pro
football. Our thoughts go out to his wife, Esther, their 4 children and 8 grandchildren.
Selwyn Named Big East Player of the Week
December 31, 2002- For the second time in three weeks, University of Pittsburgh
senior guard Laine Selwyn has been named Big East Conference Player of the Week
after she posted her second career triple-double in a 104-78 win over Norfolk
State this past weekend.Selwyn is leading the team in points (15.2 avg., rebounds
(6.2), assists (7.2) and steals (2.8), and is also hitting a league-best 91
percent from the free-throw line.
