Mendel Runs Well in Budapest
March 11, 2004--Former Big East champion Joe Mendel took 6th place in the 400
meter dash at the World Indoor Championships in Budapest last weekend. The 22-year-old
Jersey native owns a personal best outdoor time of 45.94.
Winer Named Hockey East Goalie of the Month
February 27, 2004--University of Massachusetts goalie Gabe Winer was named January's
ITECH Goaltender of the Month by Hockey East after leading the 14th-ranked Minutemen
to a 6-1-0 mark (two wins by forfeit) during a month that the Minuteman offense
struggled.
Fleischer Named Player of the Week
February 27, 2004--Penn sophomore center Jennifer Fleischer was named Ivy League
Player of the Week after she tallied 37 points and 33 boards in two games over
last weekend helping Penn improve to 7-0 in Ivy play.
Drossin Backs Out of National X-C Championships
February 9, 2004--Deena [Drossin] Kastor withdrew from this past weekend's USA
Cross Country Championships due to bad weather conditions in order to protect
herself from injury in preparation for the upcoming Olympic marathon trials.
Said Kastor, "[M]y focus this year is on the marathon trials and the marathon
with the sole hope of medaling."
Frank and Nets on a Roll
February 9, 2004--With a 99-87 win yesterday over the 76ers, new Nets coach
Lawrence Frank improved to 7-0 since taking over the head coaching duties. At
33, Frank is the youngest head coach in all of professional sports.
Fleisher Wins RCCL Classic...Again
February 9, 2004--South Florida native Bruce Fleisher closes with a clutch birdie
to capture the Royal Caribbean Classic for a third time yesterday.
Ratner Buys Nets
January 22, 2004--Native Brooklynite Bruce Ratner completed his purchase of
the New Jersey Nets yesterday. He plans to move the team to his native borough.
Olshansky will enter NFL draft
January 10, 2004--Oregon's 6-6 305 DT Igor Olshanksy has decided to pass up
his final year of eligibility and enter the April NFL Draft. Some draft projections
have Olshansky rated as high as a 2nd rounder. Best of luck, Igor!
MLB Updates
January 6, 2004--The Red Sox welcomed back Gabe Kapler, just two days after
the club let the outfielder become a free agent. Kapler, who hit .291 with 4
home runs and 23 RBIs in 68 games, signed a one-year deal worth $750,000. Elsewhere,
RHP Jason Marquis agreed last week to a $525,000, one-year contract with the
St. Louis Cardinals.
Suez Named Big East Player of the Week
December 23, 2003--Villanova sophomore forward Liad Suez was recognized for
her 26-point effort in last week's win over St. Joseph's. The 6-2 guard is the
team's leading scorer at 15.1 points per game.
