2001 US Maccabiah Basketball Team

Squad Boasted Size, Youth, and Experience

August, 2001

The men's Maccabiah basketball team won the Gold Medal at the games for the 1st time since 1985. Doug Gottlieb was named the MVP after the 82-71 championship game victory over Israel. Australia beat France for the Bronze Medal, 73-64.

Several changes in the roster were made prior to taking off for Israel as the violence in the region caused many cancellations.

Notes

Amir Bar-Netzer transferred to Fullerton St. from Santa Monica College.
Brent Fisher played the 2000-01 season for Aveiro Esgueira Basquet in Portugal and then for Elitzur Ramle in Israel.
Gabe Frank played the 2000-01 season for the Rockford Lightning (CBA and then IBL after the CBA folded).
Eric Gingold played the 2000-01 season in Russia (Lokomotiv Mineralnye Vody) and then Belgium (BBC Okapi Aalst). He had previously been attending law school at Emory University in Atlanta.
Doug Gottlieb played for the Salina (Kansas) Rattlers of the IBA and then in Russia (Ural Great) this past season.
Ben Jacobson "redshirted" at Lamar this past season.
Ryan Lexer played the 2000-01 season for Maccabi Hadera in Israel.
Justin Luber transferred to Northeastern from Florida Tech.
The Maccabiah Games were held from July 16-23, three days shorter than originally planned.

The American team leaves for Israel on July 7. The Maccabiah Games are scheduled for July 16-26.
